Lineage VI

Three Dossey Lines from South Carolina to Arkansas/Texas/Oklahoma

In contrast to the Dossey/Dawsey/Dorsey families of Lineage II, who have shown some preference for the Dossey spelling but also used the Dawsey and Dorsey spellings, there is another set of lines that have shown preference and persistence in using the Dossey spelling.  Given this persistence, geographical proximities through much of their migration, and their involvement in the formation of the Primitive Baptist Church, it had long been thought by Dossey researchers that these Dossey branches were ultimately related though proof of the relationship has remained elusive.  It was originally thought that they were related to the Dosseys of Lineage II as well.  DNA testing has proved that indeed these Dosseys are related to one another.  However, they are not related to Lineage II Dosseys.  They now form Lineage VI of the Dorsey/Darcy/Dossey/D’Arcy DNA Project.  Their results are displayed in Table VI-1 at the end of this section.

Source: Dorsey DNA Project Results reported by Family Tree DNA and the University of Arizona 2001-2009

The first three rows of results in Table VI-1 are from descendants of 1William Greenberry Dossey who,  according to the 1850 and 1860 US Federal Censuses,  was born in South Carolina about 1787 1 , 2 .   The first known public document in which he appears is the 1812 Tax List of Franklin County, Tennessee where he is listed as Greenberry Doss  sic  3 .  There was also a Thomas K Dossey on the same tax list.  These two Dosseys appear in land records in Franklin County 4  until 1818, after which they appear in the records of Morgan County, Alabama. 5   By 1840 both are in Sevier County, Arkansas—enumerated under the spelling “Dorse”—along with several other “Dorse’s” the right ages to be their sons. 6 , 7   Most of the children of 1William Greenberry Dossey moved on into Texas and William himself was there in Limestone County  by 1860. 8

Data Line 1 of Table VI-1 is the haplotype of a descendant of 2Thomas Franklin Dossey, the presumed son of 1William Greenberry Dossey through the line /6Edward/5Earl/4Thomas M/3Thomas Franklin, Jr/2Thomas Franklin, Sr/1William Greenbury Dossey.

The second row of results in Table VI-1 is the haplotype of another descendent of 1William Greenberry Dossey through his son 2William Greenberry Dossey, Jr., b. 1817 in Tennessee 9 .  Descendants of this line, /4Arthur/3Charles/2William Greenberry, Jr./1William Greenberry, Sr., migrated to southeastern Oklahoma around 1915.

The third row of results is also a haplotype of a descendant of William Greenberry Dossey, Jr., through his son, another Thomas Franklin Dossey, whose family and descendants remained in Arkansas through the 1950’s.  (5Marvin/4Augustus/3Thomas F./2William Greenberry Jr./1William Greenberry, Sr.)

The fourth row of results are from a descendant of Thomas K. Dossey b. about 1789 in SC 10  and is presumed to be the brother of 1William G. Dossey, Sr. b 1787 SC.  Thomas K Dossey appears with 1William G Dossey, Sr. in land records of Tennessee and the census records of Alabama and Arkansas.  Although Thomas K Dossey and some of his children moved with the other Dosseys to Arkansas, the haplotype in Row Four is that of a descendant his son James H. Dossey whose line, remained in Alabama--5Graham/4Thomas J./3William D./2James H./1Thomas K. Dossey.

Researchers of this line believe that the father of William Greenberry Dossey was also named William.  There is a William Dossey recorded in the 1790 U.S. Federal Census for Pendleton District South Carolina.  Also in the household are two free white males under the age of 16 who could account for the proposed brothers William Greenberry (b. 1787) and Thomas K. Dossey (b. c. 1789). 11   However, at least one other group has proposed this William Dossey to be their ancestor.   In addition, this William Dossey has been found in a number of late 1700-early 1800 records in Burke County, North Carolina, the home of several Lineage III Dorseys during that time period.

Figure VI-2 is a descendancy chart that is consistent with both traditional records and biological data for this family group.
