The first six pictures were provided and identified by Beryl White around 1980.  The last two (bottom row, right) are from the photo album of my grandfather George L. White.  I recall my father, Kenneth White telling me that the photo on the far right was of Brooks White.  I would appreciate if anyone could confirm that.

Tidbits

Below are some tidbits about various sons and daughters of Edward Ocean White.  Most of them with the exception of a couple of my own comments and scans of some documentes are from a letter written to me in 1978 by Beryl White the son of Thomas Roscoe White.  I have indicated the source in parentheses after each tibit.

Thomas Roscoe White left Signal Hill Farm because of the large number of smaller ones.  There was no room for all.  he attended the Academy of Warren, Ill.  He homesteaded near Phillips, South Dakota but was unable to hold out long enough to get a clear title.  T. R. White operated a grocery store and cream station in Shullsburg until retirement in 1939 when he and mother moved to St. Paul.  Dad was very active in Masonic Lodge, the local Methodist Church where he was Sunday School Superintendent for 33 years, He was also School Board President and active in many other community affairs.  He had a fine tenor voice.  He was too generous to his customers and often supplied the needy when he could ill afford. (Beryl White, 1978)

Eddie Vernon White died of small pox. as a small child   I recall Dad telling that Eddie died in the winter and they were unable to bury him until spring because of the heavy snow and frost. So Eddie's body remained in the granary for some time. (Beryl White, 1978)

Shirley White had a beautiful voice and appeared on the stage in New York.  She was a nurse and died at home in 1924 of throat cancer. (Beryl White, 1978)

My grandfather told me Shirley died of breast cancer.  This is also the information on her death certificate.  (Nancy White Custer)

Obituary

Searle White (Sid) was a bachelor and lived all his life on the farm.  He died in a nursing home in Darlington, WI in 1966 (Beryl White, 1978)

Archy G. White died on the farm in 1948.  He had married and divorced and roamed for many years but returned to the farm to live with Sid perhaps ten years before he died. (Beryl White, 1978)

Emma Ida White was called Gyrlie by her father because she and Ted were twins and that was the way he differentiated between the two.  Gyrlie was graduated from Northwestern University in Chicago but lived at home.  She married Bill Lehr in the 1930's.  "Gyrlie was a small vivacious person who taught me to dance.  I always liked her".  (Beryl White, 1978)

Gyrlie White was a good friend of my grandmother Vida Elsner White. I am not sure how they met but my grandmother was married to Gyrlie's cousin, George White, in 1915.  According to my grandmother, Gyrlie attended Lawrence College in Appleton, Wisconsin which still today has an excellent conservatory of music.  My grandmother told of visiting Gyrlie there and staying in Ormsby Hall.  She told how they stayed out past curfew (8:00 PM) and had to crawl into the window to avoid the consequences of being late.  (This was a strange thing to hear from my very proper grandmother.)  When she told me this story, she added, "I had so much fun there.  I wanted to go there to college but my father only believed in cooking school for girls.  I wish you would go to Lawrence."  So I did.  This little story became one of the defining experiences of my life as Lawrence shaped and directed my intellectual life in ways I could never have imagined. (Nancy White Custer)

It was also Gyrlie's son Bob Lehr who rescued many old papers and documents from the Signal Hill Farmhouse.  He graciously allowed me to rummage through them and borrow many.  He made a gift of several things including an old key to the farmhouse, an old dress, and a 1860's attendance book from White Thorn School.  (Nancy White Custer)

I visited Gyrlie White in 1981.  We had a lively discussion about the past in which her memory proved to be accurate and full of detail.  (Nancy White Custer)

Loren Brooks White had a good education in mineralogy and worked in Arizona mines and later in a metal working plant in Milwaukee.   (Beryl White)

A year or so ago, I saw an inquiry on the White Family GenForum about Brooks White.  I answered it and found that the gentleman who posted it had found Brooks White's hunting license in the stock of a gun he had purchased in Alaska many years ago.  He wanted to return it to a family member.  It only took a little searching to find Brook's daughter Barbara and she now has the hunting license back in the family fold.  (Nancy White Custer)
