Nancy,

I was scanning the net and type in my great grandfather's name George Howsley) along with Pleasant Grove, California. Your website came up. I recognized several family names. My mother was actually named after "LaVanche" Howsley. There are several family members still living in the Pleasant Grove & Nicolaus area.

It was so interesting to learn about my heritage. Thank you very much.

I am Nancy's sister. Last evening my 10 year old son and I spent a long time going through the site. It was great to see the facts interspersed with anecdotes and I had much fun sharing the history with him. Nancy has shared with me over the years all the hard word and research she has done. I am looking forward to reading others' comments and additional anecdotes as that is what makes these people come alive and allows us to glimpse into our past.

Caroline White of Tennessee married Joe Evin Haney. They had two daughters, Mary and Martha, in TN before coming to TX about 1860. Daughter, Harriett Frances was born in TX in 1860 and daughter, Johanna Evin Haney was born 12-25-1863. Caroline died in childbirth or soon after. On the way home for the birth, Joe Evin Haney died while in CSA army from measles. Sisters are all buried in Hays Spring Cemetery in Houston County, Texas. In later life, Caroline's mother married Joe's father in Tennessee. I have no names of parents on either side of family.

I wonder if Thomas had a brother John Henry born July 23,1815 in Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England. He married Mary Daykin born 1815, Yorkshire. John died January 1876 in Shullsburg, Wisconsin. They had 7 children: Robert born 1835, Anna 1842, Thomas Henry Oct. 25, 1843, Mary Jane 1848, John R. 1850, James 1852, Adelaide May 10, 1856. Adelaide married John H. Adelaide White was the daughter of John Henry White, born 1815 in Skulcoats, England. She was born May 10, in 1856 in White Oak Springs, Lafayette county, WI Adelaide White married John H. Dunn in Shullsburg, WI between 1872 and 1876 and she died in Marcus, Iowa shortly after giving birth to her 18th child. Her husband, John H. Dunn, born in early 1856 in Shullsburg, was the son of James Dunn, born in 1824, from Waterford, Ireland, and the brother of Edward Dunn, born in late 1856 in Shullsburg. Edward Dunn was the father of my grandfather. Hi Michael, As much as I would like for your John Henry to be our Thomas's brother John, he doesn't quite seem to fit:( A page from an old prayer book that was found in the home of Thomas White reads, "“John White the son of John & Ruth White was Born 20th of October 1815 Between Three & Four o’clock at morning and was Christened Nov 18th Anno Domino 1815.” I see that the parents of your John were James and Harriet and that your John was born in June and not October. There is also a christening record for "our" John in the parish records of Kirkby Ravensworth in the North Riding of Yorkshire. I think Skulcoates is in the East Riding. To muddy the water more, Ruth White, in a letter to her family in December 1890 does ask "How is aunt mary white and where does she live. . ." It surely is difficult to sort things out when working with such a common name as White! There is a John White who died in 1856 in the cemetery in Shullsburg. I always guessed that that was the brother of Thomas but perhaps he was your John White instead. You have inspired me do to some more searching for Thomas's brother. Thanks for your post. Nancy

My Great-Great Grandfather, John, I believe is the brother of your George and Thomas March. Van Buren was born in 1848 Lafayette County Wisconsin. He was raised by an uncle in White Oak Springs township. I don't know what happened to his parents. He moved about, married Mary Elizabeth Bell in 1872, The ended up settling in Slayton, Minnesota (SW corner) I'm convinced this is a connection as he lived in the same township and was of English decent. Does anyone have 1860 census records from White Oak Springs. He is listed in that census and being a boy of 12 he would likely be listed with his adoptive family. You have a very nice site with good documentation. Thanks Mike

You lay out a good case that John White is related to your ancesters, but I can see one troubling discrepancy. In a letter written 1844-1846 says "my Brother John has lost his partner in life and cannot come". That sounds to me as if John's wife had died. The John White you cite married Mary Daykin before 1844. The John White that I am descended from arrived in New York aboard the MARGRET (probably Margaret) on May 25, 1856. The ship departed from Liverpool. The family consisted of John(30), Mary(30), Robt(11), Ruth(10), Anne(4) and Thos(3). There are no other Sullivans aboard, and I couldn't find any significant last names from your letter in the manifest either, so it appears they were traveling alone. The 1836 wedding date you list for John White/Mary Daykin may delegitimize Robt, but is in the ballpark. The comment about losing his life's partner does bother me, though.

The letter that you quote is not from Thomas White but rather a letter from someone named Thomas March to his parents in England which was enclosed in a letter from George and Sarah March (in Wisconsin) to Thomas and Margaret White (in Yorkshire).  In that letter, Thomas March states that his brother John (March) has lost his partner in life and will not come to America.  He also mentions Thomas White by name suggesting that he believes Thomas White will pay his brother George March’s fare to America.  The person who has lost his partner in life would then be John March, not John White.

In 1841, John and Mary White are living at Schoolmasters Pasture near Marrick.  John is age 25, Mary age 25, Robert age 6, and Ruth age 5. (This is from a transcript of the 1841 British census at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/4320/census/marrick_41.html#marrick41

I find John, Mary, Robert, Ruth, Anne and Thomas arriving on the ship Margret on May 25, 1846 (I assume your 1856 was a typo) which is almost exactly one year after the day that Thomas White and his family arrived in New York on the ship Ohio.  I found both records in the Ancestry.com. New York, 1820-1850 Passenger and Immigration Lists [database online]. Provo, Utah: MyFamily.com, Inc., 2003. Original data: New York. Registers of Vessels Arriving at the Port of New York from Foreign Ports, 1789-1919. Micropublication M237, rolls # 1-95. National Archives, Washington, D.C.

In 1850, John and Mary are living with Ruth, Ann, Thomas, and Mary J. White. (1850 US census) in Lafayette County one page away from Thomas and Margaret White and family.

By 1860, John is missing from the family but your Adelaide has been added.  If John is the person whose grave I found in Shullsburg, he died in 1856—the year that Adelaide was born. (1860 US census)  My great-great grandparents John and Margaret White are living next door to the family.

I believe that the records for Kirkby Ravensworth were not transcribed as a part of the IGI—at least I don’t find them in searching at www.familysearch.org.   I do think I have read either the microfilm of the Kirkby Ravensworth Parish at the LDS Library or seen the original at a record hall in Yorkshire.  I kind of think I saw it at the LDS library.  I have a photograph or photocopy of the prayer book page with the birth and christening information for Thomas and John.  I am traveling right now so I don’t have access to my paper files to check my notes on this.  Because the Kirkby Ravensworth records were not transcribed, Thomas and John’s christening records do not appear in the IGI.  My guess is that the person who submitted this John Henry White to the LDS database simply looked for a John White in the IGI who was the right age and picked him for his ancestor.  That’s a dangerous assumption about someone with the name John White

Hi, I was simply searching for my own name on the net and found this site! It seems really strange when you find someone who has your name. I have relatives on my father's side in Northumberland, Wales, Canada and the USA. It seems that somewhere down the line I must be related to the George March from your web site? Here's good luck to you and your site!

We are searching for a direct male line descendant of Thomas White to participate in the White Surname DNA Project. Please contact Nancy@Contexo.info for more information. You must be a descendant of Thomas White through an all male line, i.e. with the surname White.

Where can I go from here?
